Maggie Valley? Ever Wonder How the Name Came About?

Who was Maggie? The valley's namesake is a testament to its roots as an early settlement in the Smoky Mountains. In the late nineteenth century, this North Carolina community in the Smokies was reaching a critical population mass and the time had come for their own post office. The man who had arranged mail pickup from a nearby community submitted several names, including those of his three daughters, to the U.S. Postal Service as possibilities for the new post office. The U.S. Postmaster decided on Maggie as the new post office name, and the rest is history. According to local lore, when Maggie found out the post office and town would be named after her, the young girl was so embarrassed she burst into tears. Maggie later married and moved away, but she did come back to the valley many times before her death in 1979. Courtesty www.maggievalley.org
