Gingerbread House Competition at the Grove Park Inn

Since 1993, this ginger bread house competition has grown, nearly having 499 entries annually. This past weekend, the Grove Park Inn, Asheville NC was a busy destination. Not only for it's beautiful Christmas decor, spa, fine dining & so much more, boy was it busy.

This annual gingerbread house competition was a sight for sore eyes to see all the participation from all over the nation, along with the creativity that is display throughout the Grove Park Inn. You can view it til January 2, 2011. It was neat looking at all the houses and trying to guess what the ingredients were used to create such a great display. We saw lots of pretzels, whoppers, gummy worms of all shapes, LOTS OF CHOCOLATE, coconut, powderd sugar are just a few to name... check it out yourself & see if you can come up with more ingredients..

Smoky Mountain Sk8way Roller Skating Rink is Opening!

The Smoky Mountain Sk8way Roller Skating Rink will have its first skating session Friday, November 19th from 6pm-11pm.

There are not many memories that can strike up feelings of nostalgia quite the way memories of roller skating does. Most of us spent our entire weekends at the skating rink socializing with our friends and listening to the latest music while exerting all of that extra energy our parents were happy to see us use up anyway. It was just a great way for us to spend our free time and our parents didn't have to worry.
Now our children will be able to experience the same fun and create their own memories at the new roller skating rink that is set to open in Waynesville. The Smoky Mountain Sk8way, located at 19025 Great Smoky Mountain Expressway (23/74 Bypass) next to the Waynesville Cycle Center, has been under construction for several months. This week they will finish some last minute construction, receive their shipment of brand new Riedell roller skates and hold their very first skating session on Friday, November 19th from 6pm-11pm.
"None of this could have happened without the help of several of our local businesses and friends," explains Robert Bryant who is one of the owners. "We sold advertising packages to help sponsor this venture and businesses like Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentistry, United Community Bank, Cornerstone Builders, Strains Of Music and The Mountaineer, just to name a few, have really shown their support for this community and come through in a big way. We would like to thank all the people who have been involved."
The skating rink and family entertainment center will open every day and will offer public and private skating session, skate rentals, a video arcade, snack bar, wi-fi, tot area and birthday party packages. The Sk8way will also be available for field trips, day care outings, church gatherings, roller derby, inline hockey, skate lessons and adult skates. More information including times and rates can be found on their website at www.SmokyMountainSk8way.com. Their schedules and times are subject to change as the community's needs present themselves.

For The Record: The Real Facts of N.C. Real Estate

ECONOMY:

> With an unemployment rate that has dropped

steadily since its peak in February, North Carolina is

now the third-best state in the country for declining

unemployment.

> With 36,700 jobs created in the last 12 months and

commitments for 30,000 new ones, it's understand-

able why North Carolina ranks fourth in the nation for

job creation.

> North Carolina was recently ranked by Forbes

Magazine as the third-best state for business - up from

No. 5 a year ago, while Asheville and Durham were

named among the top 10 best places to retire.

> In September, retail sales rose for the third straight

month, a sign economists say should alleviate fears of

a double-dip recession since consumer spending

accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

HOMEOWNERSHIP:

> Housing starts hit a five-month high in September, a

tentative sign of improvement in the housing market.

When compared to September last year, housing starts

were up 4.1 percent.

> The country continues to regain its confidence in the

housing market. A survey by Fannie Mae shows 70

percent of Americans believe now is a good time to buy

a home - up from 64 percent in January.

> A six-month supply of homes is one of the barometers

of a healthy housing market. In September, the number

of unsold new homes fell to the lowest level since 1968

and declined from an 8.6-month supply of homes the

previous month to an eight-month supply.

> Housing affordability conditions are 60 percent better

today than they were during the housing boom. And

qualified buyers are taking notice. In September, existing

home sales rose 10 percent when compared to the

previous month.

FORECLOSURE:

> While a total of 288,345 properties were lost to fore-

closure in the third quarter, default notices - the first

step in the foreclosure process - declined 21 percent

from the same period last year.

> New help is now available in 17 North Carolina coun-

ties to homeowners who are struggling to make their

mortgage payments through the N.C. Foreclosure

Prevention Fund. Starting in December, assistance will

be available statewide and is expected to help 21,000

struggling N.C. homeowners.
