Imagine reclaiming the old minimum-security prison for the purpose of changing people's lives.
Imagine using the old prison kitchen to establish a new soup kitchen for the community. Imagine one of the prison dormitories being remodeled for a homeless shelter and the other dormitory being remodeled for a halfway house for those being released from jail. Now, imagine all of this existing at one location that sits next to the Sheriff's department and the whole project being the vision of the Sheriff himself. That is what is happening in Haywood County, North Carolina.
Most of you have probably heard about the "Ty Pennington Give Back Challenge" on TV. Haywood County prison project has made it through the first phase of voting. Out of 300 projects, in 49 States, our project (Haywood County Churches and others) has reached the second round of voting. Winning this would allow us to refurbish an old prison, in Haywood County. It would become a homeless shelter, halfway house and community ministry center. The Sherriff in our county is very involved in this effort along wth many churches.
